Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
Are there any side effects of red light therapy?
LED devices are extremely low risk when used properly. Research to date suggests that there are no side effects.
-
Does light therapy hurt?
No. Light therapy is painless.
-
How safe is light therapy?
Low-level light therapy is based on LED technology developed for NASA's human space experiments. This proprietary LED technology generates negligible amounts of heat compared to lasers and is not considered a significant source of danger.
-
Does light therapy also work with UV light?
No. The machines only use a combination of red, near-infrared (not visible to the naked eye) and blue LEDs.
-
Pulsating or non-pulsating light?
The machines have both pulsating and non-pulsating programmes. Pulses allow cells to absorb more energy during treatment, resulting in better and faster clinical results.
-
How long is the treatment?
10-20 minutes for best results.
-
Do I need any special preparation before use?
Many makeup formulas contain minerals that can reflect light. Clean, freshly washed skin is recommended for best results.
-
Why do I have to wash off my make-up?
Many makeup formulas contain minerals that can reflect light. Clean, freshly washed skin is recommended for best results.
-
Do I need to lie down for treatment?
No. The machines can be used sitting or lying down.
-
What is the best position to use it?
The best position is the one that is most comfortable for you.
-
Can I wear my make-up after the treatment?
Yes, you can return to all normal activities immediately after treatment.
-
Can I take the plane with me when I travel?
Yes. Smaller machines are light and portable, ideal for travelling.
-
Who can use the machines?
Not recommended for children under 12 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, people with epilepsy, people with known tumours or metastases and people with photosensitivity.
-
How far away from the light should I be and how long should a red light therapy treatment last?
We recommend a distance of 15-30cm from the illuminated area for 10-20 minutes. The greater the distance from the body, the lower the irradiance and the longer the time required.
-
When during the day can I use red light therapy?
Red light therapy can be used at any time of the day. The most common time is in the morning, but it can also be used before or after exercise.
-
Is it possible to have more than one therapy session in one day?
Red light therapy can be used several times a day. If you are repeatedly illuminating the same part of the body, we recommend a maximum of 30 minutes per day, which you can divide into 2 or 3 sessions.
-
Does it make sense to use red light therapy in the summer?
Yes, red light therapy also has many benefits in summer, preparing the skin for UV rays and making it more resistant to sunburn.
-
How is red light therapy related to sun exposure?
Red light therapy is a quick and convenient method for home use that delivers the benefits of light in a concentrated form. In addition, red light therapy can help compensate for the negative effects of UV radiation.
-
Can light be overdosed?
In photobiomodulation there is a so-called "biphasic dose response". This means that too low a dose of light is not effective enough, the ideal dose has a maximum effect, and too high a dose again loses the positive effect.
-
Can I look into the light, or do I have to keep my eyes closed?
Always keep your eyes closed when using. Light penetrates the eyelids and can have a positive effect on both eyes and vision.
-
Can I use red light therapy in the evening?
Yes, but make sure that the red light is not directed at your eyes - even with your eyes closed - about 2-3 hours before bedtime. When going straight to bed, choose the mode that helps you fall asleep.
-
Why are goggles in the package?
Some people are more sensitive to high intensity light and find it uncomfortable to use red light therapy even with their eyes closed. We have therefore included goggles in the package.
-
What is the difference between the red (RED) and near infrared (NIR) spectrum?
The red (RED) spectrum is mainly near the surface of the skin, while the near-infrared spectrum (NIR) penetrates subcutaneous tissues to a depth of a few centimetres.
-
Should the RED and NIR spectrum be used together or separately?
They are usually used together as they work synergistically. However, they can also be used separately, especially in the evening when the invisible NIR spectrum is more recommended.
-
How can I use red light therapy to improve sports performance?
In order to improve sports performance, it is recommended to use light therapy before sporting activity, by illuminating the most affected muscle areas to warm them up.
-
How can I use red light therapy for regeneration?
For maximum regenerative effect, red light therapy is best used immediately after sporting activity. It is ideal to illuminate the muscles that are most stressed.
-
Do the devices radiate heat?
The near-infrared light emits a mild, pleasant heat.
-
How can light increase my energy?
Red and near-infrared light increases the number of mitochondria in the body and makes them work more efficiently. Simply put, mitochondria are the power plants of cells that produce energy in the form of ATP. When we produce more ATP, we have more energy.
-
Do devices increase the amount of vitamin D in the body?
Vitamin D is synthesised in the body by UV radiation, which is not emitted by our devices. So appliances do not increase vitamin D levels.
-
Why are half of the LEDs off?
They actually emit invisible near-infrared light. Our eyes cannot see this - similar to UV light, which is at the other end of the visible spectrum. We can check its operation with the camera on a mobile phone.
-
What is the difference between a 30-degree and a 60-degree beam angle?
For our devices, we have chosen a beam angle of 30 degrees to optimise the delivery of high irradiance over longer distances. Wider beam angles scatter light faster - as the distance increases - leading to less effective treatment. In contrast, a 30-degree angle concentrates the light better, retaining its power even at greater distances.
-
Can red light therapy be used during pregnancy?
Red light therapy can also be used during pregnancy (in consultation with a doctor). When illuminating the abdomen, a greater distance from the panel is recommended, especially in the NIR spectrum (at least 30-50 centimetres), due to the heat generated.
-
How does the money-back guarantee work?
If you are not satisfied with your red light device for any reason, you can return it to us. We offer a 30-day trial period for all RED LIGHT MED products. Detailed information can be found on our service/warranty/breakdown page.
-
What to do if the device does not work?
If the device does not work, first unplug it, then plug it back in and check again. Make sure all connections are tight and there are no visible faults. If the problem persists, click on the Service/Warranty/Failure page and go through the "In case of failure" protocol.
-
Can red light therapy be used on several areas of the body at the same time?
Yes, red light therapy can be applied to several areas of the body at once, but make sure that each area gets the time and distance needed for the treatment.
